Why I Am Building This Brand

The fragrance industry has always assumed its customers can see. Walk into any perfume counter and the experience unfolds visually — the bottle, the label, the tester card with its small printed text. For most people this is invisible. For me, it has always been present.

I lost my sight at a young age, and for a long time the world of luxury fragrance felt designed for someone else. Not because the scents were wrong, but because every touchpoint around them assumed a kind of access I did not have.

London Atelier by NS is my attempt to change that — not just for me, but for the millions of people for whom the same experience is everyday. We are not a charity project. We are a brand with a genuine scent concept, a real market, and a founder who brings something to fragrance formulation that no sighted founder can replicate.

This is not about adding Braille to an existing product and calling it inclusive. It is about building the product from the beginning with every sense in mind — and proving that when you do, the result is better for everyone.

Designing for Every Sense — What That Actually Means

When people hear "inclusive design" in beauty, they often think of shade range, or large print labels. Occasionally they think of Braille. Very rarely do they think about the whole tactile experience of picking up a bottle and knowing — without seeing — what it is, where the cap is, and how to use it.

The features we are developing at London Atelier by NS — Braille identifiers, a tactile marker to locate the QR code, a possible magnetic closure, an audio guide through the QR code itself — are not a checklist. They are decisions that require testing, iteration and honest feedback from the people they are designed for.

Each feature is currently at concept or prototype stage. We are not claiming they work perfectly yet. We are claiming that they matter — and that we are the first fragrance brand to treat them as foundational rather than supplementary.

True inclusive design is slow. It requires co-design with the people you are building for. It requires accepting feedback that challenges your assumptions. We are committed to that process, however long it takes.

The Smell of London — How a City Becomes a Scent

People who have not lost their sight often describe London visually — the architecture, the skyline, the light on the Thames. When you experience a city primarily through your other senses, London becomes something different.

It is the smell of cut grass and earth after rain in Hyde Park on a June morning. It is the warm, slightly metallic air of the Underground at rush hour. It is the bakeries on Portobello Road, the cold clarity of the air by the river at night, the impossible mixture of exhaust and cut flowers near Borough Market on a Saturday.

When I began developing the London Atelier by NS scent concept, I did not start with a mood board. I started with memory. Specifically, with the smell of London as I know it — which is to say, as it actually is, rather than as it is imagined.

The debut fragrance is a clean, fresh direction — something that captures the green, urban clarity that London has at its best. Not nostalgic. Not sweet. Precise, alive, and unmistakably of this city.
